The bit about the dissonance between teachers demanding to be looked at when they are speaking to you but hike feels like disrespect - I felt that. What does it mean to feel like you need to constantly shape shift or be aware and contort yourself to fit a context from so young. This makes me think about how this rule of engagement impacted who we are today.

Rose, this is so true: " I noticed students’ eyes search and assess the adults in their lives constantly." This sentence really stood out to me. They really do watch everything. In a way, it's heartening to see that there is still some childlike curiosity left in the world, but at the same time, it definitely puts quite a bit of responsibility on the watched. This is a great reminder. :)

As adults, we never know how we affect the children in our lives. Whether it be our own or those we come across, like for you in the public schools. We are demanding things from them when we also need ‘mending’ of ourselves. This is some deep writing, I love it 🥰
